Genetic improvement

We work to foster genetic improvement

The native Pyrenean breeds of dairy sheep: Latxa, Manech and Basco-Béarnaise, have a high economic and social value; however, their survival is threatened by the presence of other breeds offering far more intensive production systems

At NEIKER we work to promote the common management of genetic improvement programmes on both sides of the Pyrenees, to increase the competitiveness of native dairy breeds and to strengthen their introduction and exploitation.

The first steps have already been taken and, together with technicians from livestock associations in the Basque Country and Navarre, we have homogenised the criteria used to morphologically qualify the Manech Tête Rouge breed.
