Improving the nutrition of dairy cattle is a key tool to reduce environmental problems caused by the accumulation of nitrogen in dairy farms. A study of the Basque Institute of Agricultural Research and Development-NEIKER-Tecnalia-led by biologist Haritz Arriaga and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, has shown it can reduce up to 35% the accumulation of nitrogen in the establishments of the Basque Country with a properly balanced diet of proteins, without reducing milk production.
