GOVARPIM

Innovation in pepper and chilli pepper production processes by means of resistant varieties and new field management protocols.

  • Start of project: 10/10/2022
  • End of project: 10/10/2024
  • Funders: Basque Government
  • Budget: 20,061.66 € (21.02% financed)
  • Partners: BIHOEL, GILBE, BARRENETXE SCOOP and NEIKER

This operational group was set up to solve the serious problem that Gernika pepper and Ibarra chilli pepper farms have with Tobamoviruses (viruses that are transmitted by seed and by contact).

These autochthonous varieties are sensitive to these viruses which cause high economic losses due to their rapid propagation and high persistence.

NEIKER has obtained Tobamovirus resistant varieties of both Gernika pepper and Ibarra chilli pepper. An attempt will be made to solve this problem by transferring genetically resistant plant material. This material will be tested on farms historically affected by these viruses.

In addition, an agreed protocol of cultural hygiene practices will be developed and disseminated to reduce the risk of these resistance genes being reassimilated by the viruses.
