General objective:
Increased competitiveness and sustainability of selection schemes for Latxa and Manech breeds through joint methodologies of genetic evaluation and incorporation of traits trying to respond to the challenges posed within the context of climate change and globalisation.
Specific objectives:
1. Consolidation of ARTALDEAN AEIE: comparative description of Latxa-Manech mammary morphology data and development of proposals for the operation of ARTALDEAN.
2. Optimisation of international genomic evaluation and new traits towards sustainability: development of an international genomic evaluation and study of genetic variability for longevity, methane emissions and thermotolerance.
3. New technologies and methodologies at the service of the livestock sector to help generational replacement: Analysis of the social and agro-ecological impact of Latxa breed livestock farms and development of proposals for the inclusion of organic production in selection schemes.
Results
The results of ARDI2 will strengthen the dairy sheep farming sector on both sides of the border and allow both sheep farmers and the territory itself to benefit from improvements in the competitiveness of the indigenous Latxa and Manech breeds.
