VENBOVCAR

The development of new diagnostic and control tools for bovine trichomoniasis and genital campylobacteriosis

  • Funding: INIA (National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology)
  • Leader: Gorka Aduriz
  • Implementation: 2017-2020

Bovine trichomoniasis and campylobacteriosis are two sexually transmitted diseases that cause early reproductive failure in cattle. In Spain, the most recent studies show a prevalence in stud animals of 15% and 9.5% for trichomoniasis and genital campylobacteriosis, respectively, leading to a 17% decrease in the number of calves born per year on infected farms. The aim of this project is to research new molecular tools that make it possible to implement a routine diagnosis of and effective control measures for the disease, such as vaccination, in farms with natural breeding programmes.

General objective:

To develop new tools to improve the diagnosis and control of bovine trichomoniasis and genital campylobacteriosis.

Specific objectives:

  1. Improvement in the current methods for diagnosing bovine trichomoniasis and campylobacteriosis.
  2. Development of an inactivated vaccine against bovine trichomoniasis
  3. Molecular characterisation of isolates of T. foetus and Campylobacter species in samples from bull foreskins.
