Project

Towards the conservation and management of resilient agroforestry systems through silvopastoralism

Silvopastoralism at the service of forests

Climate change is causing major detrimental effects on European forests and, among them, forest fires are one of the biggest threats.

In this scenario, it is essential to increase the resilience of Atlantic and sub-Atlantic forests to the effects of climate change, and the implementation of silvopastoral measures may be one of the alternatives.

Goals

LIFE SILFORE is a "demonstrator" project that poses the following challenges:

  • Reduce fuel biomass through grazing.
  • Increase biological diversity favored by the generation of multiple gradients of light, humidity, fertility, etc. as well as various ecological niches for plants and animals with different requirements. Said biodiversity is a key element in guaranteeing the resilience of tree patches in the face of impacts such as those generated by climate change.
  • Conserve provision of ecosystem services at a landscape and regional scale.

Life Silfore is a project funded by the LIFE program of the European Union.
