TRAYECTORIA

Haritz Arriaga is B. Sc in Biology (University of The Basque Country, 2000), who got his PhD degree in 2010 at the Faculty of Veterinary of Autonomous University of Barcelona. Since 2004, his expertise area is the mitigation of greenhouse gas (N2O, CH4 and CO2) and ammonia (NH3) losses from the agricultural sector (including agricultural and livestock production). Dr. Arriaga has been involved in many regional, national and international research projects, in which different mitigation strategies have been studied: (i) dairy cattle nutrition, (ii) application of additives on slurry storage, (iii) use of physical covers on digestate lagoons, (iv) slurry injection and incorporation in agricultural soils, and (v) the addition of nitrification inhibitors to slurry. In addition, he has significantly contributed to the assessment of the effect of different manure treatments on NH3 and GHG losses: flexible bag storage for dairy cattle slurry, solid manure composting, and manure drying tunnel at laying house facilities. Dr. Arriaga has obtained good skills on different methodologies for assessing gaseous losses at different stages of the livestock production. Dr. Arriaga took also part in developing BATFARM model and software. This model aimed to simulate the effect of the best available techniques BAT in livestock farms (dairy cattle, pig, laying hen, broilers) in order to select the most appropriate strategy to mitigate ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) losses. He is currently widening his research area to the environmental sustainability assessment of livestock production systems (cattle, sheep, pig, poultry). The scientific information generated throughout his professional career is reported in the 16 scientific publications signed by Dr. Arriaga.
