Sorkunde Mendarte has a doctorate in biological sciences from the University of Basque Country. She has worked on projects related to pastoral agroecosystems: mountain pastures, silvopastoral systems and mowing meadows in relation to their ecology and sustainable management. Broadly speaking, these projects are aimed at evaluating the quality and health of agroecosystems through the use of sustainability indicators. These indicators are based on floristic inventories, biodiversity indices, analysis of soil, pasture, and trees and take into account their agronomic and productive evaluation. For achive this, she uses transversal methodologies such as Geographic Information Systems and univariate and multivariate statistical tools for data analysis. In addition, she has worked with chemometric tools to obtain calibration and prediction models of some soil and plant properties using a portable NIRS (near infrared spectroscopy). More recently, she has started to use remote sensing tools from satellite images applied to pastoral agroecosystems.
